Pulled over to side of road to get a closer look at a gray fox carcass (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) and detected a possible mountain lion carcass (the gray fox had only been dead less than 24 hours [most likely]). The skull of the animal was missing. Carcass had obviously been there for some time. Upon examining the photos, we observed the long tail and sent the photos to Pathways for Wildlife for assistance in identifying the carcass. They indicated that the long tail, length of the front and back bones, and shape of the body were likely that of a mountain lion. During the site visit, we did not notice the long tail, because oncoming traffic was a safety concern and we did not stay too long.
