Observation Date / Time

On May 16, 2016, Bighorn Institute received a report of a bighorn sheep hit by a car on Hwy 74 in the early afternoon around post mile marker 86. An accident witness said the ram looked like it had a broken left hind leg when it got up and ran off. A carcass could not be located at that time. On May 17th, a different motorist called in the morning to report a dead bighorn along Highway 74. We found a 2 year old ram carcass on the east side of Hwy 74 near post mile marker 86.94. A coyote was observed scavenging on the ram upon arrival, but the ram had a broken left leg as described by the accident witness on May 16th and the carcass looked relatively fresh.
