Observation Date / Time

I am filing this report for the Bighorn Institute (BI) staff who handled the call and made the identification. BI staff received a call at 0705hrs on Saturday morning June 13th from Riverside County Sherriff's Dept. that a sheep had been hit and killed on Jefferson and Ave. 52 in La Quinta. They responded immediately (and called CDFW staff) and at 0745hrs found a 3-yr old unmarked ram dead on the west side of Jefferson ~30m from the road. Three officers waited at the scene and reported that around 0630 hrs a woman was driving south on Jefferson and the ram ran out in front of her. The airbags deployed and the ram turned around and went back to the west side of the road where it died. Some field workers saw another bighorn with the ram that was hit, but staff did not see any other sheep. The ram was collected and brought it to the Institute where CDFW staf picked it up around 1015 hrs and took the carcass to the CAHFS lab in San Bernardino for necropsy.
