Southern mixed chaparral on both sides of the road. I'm not well-versed in identification of chipmunks. Two species occur in San Diego County: Tamias merriami and T. obscurus. San Diego Natural History Museum's checklist of the mammals of SD County states that T. obscurus occurs 'only near Jacumba'. Based on that, my identification of this as T. merriami is little more than a guess.
