I removed the bat from the roadway and took it home to try and key it out. By process of elimination, it seems to be the Big Brown Bat. The forearm length was 46mm, which eliminated similar appearing, smaller species. Checking the dentition would have confirmed it, but something carried it off during the night before I could count the teeth! I have found bats in this location before, in previous summers. Possible reason for being hit here: because it is on a curve, and people frequently exceed the speed limit, maybe it didn't have time to react.
