The weather was warm and sunny. The snake had probably been basking on the road that morning when it was struck. The rattle was missing and I could not find it anywhere nearby. I suspect that someone who came along the carcass later in the day removed the rattle as a trophy. The surrounding habitat is non-native grassland and dry land farming. The highway has a gravel shoulder.
