Observation Date / Time
I have driven this highway nearly daily since 2012, and saw a big increase in wildlife mortality following the "Buckhorn" HWY 299 realignment project (~2013-2018) which straightened the highway, allowing higher vehicle speeds (which are rarely enforced anyway) and more traffic.
Fisher was sent to Mourab Gabriel at the USFS Rocky Mountain Research Station. Many deer, ringtail, and gray fox are killed on Highway 299 in the Douglas City area, within a few miles of its intersection with HWY 3. Deer almost daily. Occasionally see bear, bobcat, elk, racoon, turkey, robins, and vultures killed as well.
