Honestly not the easiest ID - could this be a northern? Both occur in this area. Eye color is no use. Color of stripes on sides of ventral scales should help here but I really can’t see any, whether dark or light. I saw a couple of live ones that quickly scuttled into blackberry tangles. None were very large, which would have been obvious southerns.

Dead on road. This is a private ranch just up the South Fork Ten Mile River, from its confluence with the mainstem.
