Observation Date / Time

'Carcass Disappearance' I was fortunate in that I came upon this squirrel just a few hours after being killed. The photo displays the position of the squirrel in the roadway. This is a county road with no dividing line, Foothill Pine/Interior Live Oak to the east and a small intermittent stream to the west. Both sides have livestock fencing within a few feet of the road edge. Vehicle speeds typically exceed the posted limit. Sheep, horses and cattle are grazed throughout this area. Turkey vultures can be seen on most days with raccoon, striped skunk, deer and acorn woodpeckers being the most common. I went back to this site four hours after my observation and the squirrel carcass was gone. I did not see any native wildlife at the site nor any signs of ground disturbance (pooling blood, blood trail, surface gravel displacement) at the carcass position in the roadway. I did examine the road edges finding no sign of the carcass. I have observed turkey vultures removing squirrel carcasses along this roadway in the past.
