I've walked this road 3 times in the 8 years I've worked here. San Diego National Wildlife Refuge acquired the 1900+ acres including this road today, and that's when I found this K-rat. The only vehicular traffic on this road is U.S. border patrol, and perhaps some unauthorized mountain bike or motorcycle activity, but at night, when kangaroo rats are active, it's going to be border patrol. I'm not well-versed in identifying kangaroo rats to species, especially in the condition this one's in, but D. simulans is the default k-rat in the mesas and foothills of southern coastal San Diego County.
